Types of Forehands (And Which is Right for You)

By Jorge Capestany, RSPA Master Professional, and PTR International Master Professional

If you look at the best players in the world, you will see plenty of variation on the types of forehands they use.

This post and video break down one of the most important shots in tennis,  the forehand, and explore the different types of players use to gain an advantage on the court.

Too often, players think of the forehand as just “one shot.”

But in reality, there are multiple variations, each designed for a specific situation.

Think of it this way…

You have your main forehand, let’s call it your Drive.

Then you also need secondary forehands, including:

  • Slice Forehand – used to throw your opponent’s rhythm off.

  • Lob Forehand – used to back an opponent off the net

  • Drop Forehand – used to bring an opponent to the net.

  • Loop Forehand – used to back your opponent off the baseline.

  • Heavy Topspin Forehand – used to increase safety margins while pressing your opponent.

  • Dipping Roller Forehand – used when passing an opponent who is at the net.

The ability to deploy these forehand variations is what separates solid players from truly effective competitors.

You’ll see how players can adjust their forehand based on factors such as the incoming ball’s height, court position, and tactical intent.

The video below comes from one of the 145 courses we have on Tennis Drills TV.

It comes from a course titled Forehand Technique and Corrections, and details various types of forehands in today’s game.

Final Thoughts…

Whether it’s a more aggressive drive, a controlled rally ball, or a higher-margin topspin shot, each version serves a purpose.

The key takeaway? Great players don’t just hit forehands; they choose the right forehand.

By learning to recognize and practice these different types, you’ll not only improve your consistency but also make smarter decisions during points.

And ultimately, that’s what leads to winning more matches.
